What a couple of hours can do...

by Jason Bollinger on March 18th, 2015

We posted last week about our friends from Uganda being with us. Since our mission work is done in the context of strong relationships, spending time together is of the utmost importance. We spent some time at a conference, some time in different churches, some time playing, and some time shopping for items hard to come by in Africa.

Shopping is not my favorite thing, but shopping with friends from other countries (to be a blessing to them) is actually one of my favorite things. Last week, the Brownbacks, Holly and I, and some other folks spent time chauffering our friends around. One of those days a request was made to visit Guitar Center for strings and plectrums (picks for us Americans). While there, Herbert wanted to look at guitars.

Herbert is a great worship leader, and his kids are up and coming. They all do a really great job. However, their gear is very limited. Most of what they use on a weekly basis is hand-me-downs from various churches and people who have donated. They do amazing with what they have, but a lot of what they have is pretty banged up.

By the way...I'm going to be taking some gear to them at the end of May if anyone has any quality PA gear or instruments they would like to contribute. I have collected some, but let me know if you have something of quality you feel like God may be saying you should invest into a great place! Let me know if you have any ideas or questions!

Back to Guitar Center...we spent what turned into a couple of hours looking and talking guitars and applications. We finally landed on the guitar above. It's a relatively inexpensive guitar, but it played nice, was set-up well, and I thought it would be especially good for the kids. I have a hard enough time making decisions like this for myself, and I wanted to make sure we got this one right.

As the calendar would have it, Andy (CEO of Links UK) arrived in Uganda just before our friends returned. He posted to his Facebook page a time of worship they shared in Herbert & Eve's home. As I look at that picture, I'm amazed at how a couple of hours of my time is now being used to lead people in Uganda in worship.

When we talk about giving to missions, one of the biggest things you can give is your time. Thank you to those of you who invested hours and days into Herbert and Eve while they were here. You were a tremendous blessing - more than you even know.

Don't underestimate the value of being available for Guitar Center runs or other opportunities to bless those on the front lines of missions. You can give money, but you can also give of your time or expertise.  You never know what a couple of hours given to the Kingdom can do.

So, if you hear of a missionary or missionary family who are visiting your area, maybe you can offer up a couple of hours. Don't assume they don't need you or want to spend time with you. Your investment into them might just literally change the world.
